Washington Post: Gunfire erupts at Venezuelan prison, authorities use tear gas, saying some inmates resisting
CARACAS, Venezuela — Gunfire has erupted at a Venezuelan prison, and authorities are using tear gas as they attempt to bring the situation under control.
Top prisons official Iris Varela says on television that a group of inmates at La Planta prison has been resisting planned transfers to other lockups. She says shots were fired from inside the prison.
National Guard troops in anti-riot gear gathered outside, and clouds of tear gas floated in the air.
Prisoners’ relatives wept outside. Firefighters treated at least two relatives who inhaled tear gas.
Varela appealed for calm. She said on Saturday that more than half of the prison’s inmates have been moved elsewhere and that authorities plan to shut down the crowded prison.
There were no immediate reports of injuries in the gunfire.
